What Is a CMS?
A Content Management System (CMS) is an invaluable tool for maintaining your website.
What is a CMS? As well as allowing you to update your content, it's based on a modular system that allows extra features to be added, quickly and easily.
- Make updates, simply by logging into your website via your browser
- Add new pages, using a system very much like a word processor
- Save money by doing what a web designer would charge you for under normal circumstances
- A CMS is updated by thousands of developers worldwide, with lots of online information and tutorials
Fundamental CMS features:
- Database driven websites
- Upload images to your website via your browser
- Customisable layouts for your website
- Upload documents for customer use, e.g. PDF's
- Multiple user accounts - each user has their own separate log in facility
- Admin (you!) can control which of your staff is authorised for a particular task
Advanced CMS features:
- Modules - modules are snippets of code that can be uploaded to your site and provide extra functionality. For example, slideshows, galleries and much, much more.
- Components - as above, simple to install, but giving hugely powerful features, for example, online ecommerce websites.
